Boorhaman Church

31/7/2010

Picture
This is the Boorhaman Church. A church and a pub and half a dozen houses make up Boorhaman.
Also today I took a few photos of a bike race called the Shepparton Classic which came close to Wangaratta.
I stood up on The Taminick Gap in the gloom and mist to take a few shots. I added some photos to my website in a new Gallery called Shepparton Classic which you can find as a sub page of my sport Gallery.

Umbango

This is an image I took at my bothers farm located near Tarcutta NSW. I was a little pissed off because I shot them all with my camera on 800 ISO as I forgot to check that particular setting. Anyway I used a noise reduction filter and then turned it into a black and white (quadtone to be precise). Could be 100 years ago I reckon.

Another Moon

Couldn't help myself tonight when I saw this beautiful moon in the sky.

Farmers run Alpacas with their sheep as they are very protective and keep foxes away from the lambs. They also have pretty good dreadlocks by the look of this one.

The Moon

I had the 400mm lens on again today and was looking for birds around the house.
There wasn't much happening and the light was getting dim. So for a little experiment
I photographed the moon, I was surprised at the detail and am now thinking of what I
can do in the future.

House Renovations No 2

12/7/2010

Picture
We have found the chainsaw to be a useful tool in house renovation. Here is Fox cutting out an old Redgum stud.
We had to reorder a couple of windows today as the old house is not that square anymore and things change as we go.Fox is a master at working things out when we come across a problem.

Picture
Having fun with an old mirror. This mirror is a pretty nice shape and I am going to keep it for what I'm not sure.

Yours truly learning the fine art of house renovating. Photography courtesy of Fox.

Cattle Portrait

12/7/2010

Picture
Whilst walking up the Black Dog creek which runs along the edge of my property these inquisitive cattle decided to see what I was doing. I was walking with my 2 dogs whom I had borrowed back from my neighbors (I gave the dogs to my neighbors when I leased most of my farm 18 months ago). I had taken my camera with the 400mm lens thinking I might see some birds, instead I turned my lens on this Brahman cow and calf for a quick portrait before they had had enough of us and ran off.

Birds

I recently purchased a second hand Canon EF 400 f5.6 L series lens. I am pretty happy with the lens it's just a pity it's only f5.6 meaning you need pretty good light or you have to wind up the ISO. Unfortunately the budget doesn't allow for a f2.8 model. I seem to be using the lens for photographing wildlife, mainly birds, at this stage.
In this image some grain has been spilt on the ground so the birds are having a free for all. I've also added a new image to the "Wildlife" gallery of 2 Red-rumped Parrots.

Sailing on Sydney Harbour

5/7/2010

Today we went out on my sister Anne and her Husband Gary's yacht. The weather was a little ordinary so we just motored out to the Heads and back. Their yacht is a 14 metre sloop manufactured by Hallberg- Rassy in Sweden. It a beautiful boat and I was pretty happy not to get sea sick as I havn't been out on the ocean for ages. The light was very grey but not bad for portraits. My family has many generations of sailors in our ancestral pool and some are still involved in the shipping business in Germany. My brother has some old oil paintings featuring some of my family's sailing ships hanging on the walls of his pool room,I think they are dated around the early 1800's.

Bike Fit with Steve Hogg

2/7/2010

Picture
Yesterday I had my much anticipated bike fit with Steve Hogg at Cyclefitcentre.com/Pedal Pushers  in Rosebery Sydney.
I felt immediately comfortable and found the atmosphere in the shop very relaxed and friendly.
The consultation started with Steve asking me a few questions as to why I had came to see him as well as what physical issues I had. Also my cycling aspirations were discussed as well as my current cycling activities.
He then went through a very thorough process of measuring my body and posture as well as flexibility. It was obvious pretty quickly that my left leg is around 6mm shorter than my right and my posture is pretty crap. I also have very tight hamstrings. I am not quite sure how to describe it  but it became pretty clear that good posture increases your functional strength immediately. I was also given a neurological test whilst blindfolded and had to be rescued twice from running into some of the products in the shop.
Once I got on the bike Steve seemed to think that my position was reasonable and would require mainly fine tuning.
The seat was lowered 6mm and 2mm forward, cleat position adjusted , various shims and wedges were placed in shoes as well as under cleats to get me more balanced and strong on the bike  whilst everything was double checked to make sure it was correct. The last thing that was done was to untape the bars and bring the hoods up higher which felt heaps better. I was pretty pleased that my bike was pretty good already and we didn't need to change any components.I then had around an eight kilometre hard effort against a simulated peloton to see if I maintained my improved form when fatigued, unfortunately I couldn't hold off one of these riders on the last climb(apparently you achieve legend status if you beat him) . All up the procedure took probably close to 4 hours and I now need to get out on the bike and do some low intensity riding for a few weeks to get used to the changes.
I was also given some suggested reading to help with posture awareness and flexibility as well as core strength. I was also given a diagram with all the correct bike frame measurements for me and how to measure them correctly as well as all the changes we made from my original set up.
Whilst I am pretty sure I wont make it on the "athletes we have positioned" list I may be remembered as the first person to come with a box of beer.

Below is a photo of Steve's own bike.
