Hume Veterans 52 km "President's Shield" Handicap

2/10/2011

After the miserable weather of the last few day's and the disappointment of Collingwoood losing the grand final I awoke to sunny skies and feeling optimistic about today's race. With hardly a kilometer pedalled this week it was an opportunity to get out on the bike and enjoy the experience.
A good roll up turned up for the "President's Shield", a 52 km handicap race starting and finishing in Glenrowan. I was pleased to see Laurie Lyster returning to the fray looking happy as always and sporting a new bike.

My group started 13 minutes after limit and as we made our way out of Glenrowan I was surprised at the strength of the South Easterly wind. After adjusting our rotation so the group was working the correct way for the wind direction we rode at a solid pace out to Greta before turning right and heading towards Ryan's Creek which was to be the turnaround point for the day. There were a few sections of gravel where road works were being carried out but these were no trouble at the time. There are a few rolling hills along this course which makes for a bit of variety and gives you an idea who to watch should we get to the finish as the run into Glenrowan is largely uphill.
Arriving at the turnaround we caught a couple of the limit riders which left Kay Huggins still up the road. There is a little climb pretty much straight away and by the time we had crested it we had lost a couple of riders. Also, the following groups were all converging and closing in. After a couple more kilometers sharing the turns with Bernie Grealy I found myself alone after another of the climbs. With a decent tail wind and the thought of the others closing in I decided to see how long I could survive and I still had to catch Kay who was now in sight just ahead. Passing Kay on one of the rollong hills the obvious thing was to just try and time trial the rest of the way and see what happens. Turning left at Greta with a nice little break the thought of survival seemed maybe possible but with the caliber of riders in the following groups you knew they would be coming hard.
I was finally caught by a mixture of Scratch, the 2 minutes group,Gavin Frawley from 5 min. and Peter Gottschling from the 9 minute group as we were getting into the foothills of Glenrowan with probably about 4-5km still to race. After some words of encouragement from Tully Lyster(Scratch) I managed to jump on the back of their train and try and hang on up into Glenrowan. Managing to hang on until about 500 metres to race they disappeared to fight out the finish between them. Steve Kilpatrick, owner of "The Full Cycle" in Albury, got the win with Tully Lyster recording the fastest time of the day.
